EPV Compression Tools allow to compress SMF and other records useful to analyze z/OS performance. They run on z/OS greatly reducing the file size by exploiting zIIP engines with a very small impact on CPU utilization.
Goals
The main goal of EPV Compression Tools is to allow compressing SMF and other records, useful to analyze z/OS performance (such as IMS logs and DCOLLECT output), and transferring them to an external platform where they can be exploited by EPV Products and other tools. It is possible to compress the files and transfer them, using sftp, in just one step. In the same step it is also possible to split large files to files of the desired size, allowing to enhance performance and parallelism during the reading phase on the external platform.
Product scope
All the VB and VBS files are supported. Sequential text files are also supported.
Installation
EPV Compression Tools runs on Unix System Services in z/OS. The installation process is very quick and easy. You just have to copy some .jar files in a file system of your choice.
Run
To run EPV Compression Tools you have to run simple JCLs. Samples are provided with the tools
Requirements
EPV Compression Tools have no pre-requisites.
Lite license
EPV Compression Tools can be provided with a Lite license which is free and reserved to all customers already using a qualifying EPV product. The Lite license allows to use zip compression only. Qualifying products are EPV zParser Full, EPV for z/OS, EPV for Db2, EPV for CICS, EPV for MQ.
Full license
EPV Compression Tools can be provided with a Full license which is not expensive. The Full license allows to use both zip and lzf compression. Lzf compression allows a performance boost due to significant elapsed time reduction.
